I just got back in the game recently after a long hiatus & now I'm slowly returning back & today I see a lot of people using Upstart Goblin & I can see that this card has become an obsession among the yugioh community.

But, not long time ago when I was still playing, people didn't care about this card & it was rarely used, I'm creating this discussion to reveal the reasons behind that, why would anyone not run this card?

NOTE: I'm not trying to convince you that Upstart Goblin is either a bad or a good card, I'm simply putting it under a discussion.

So what is the basic function of Upstart Goblin? It grants your opponent 1000 LPs, but let you draw a card. The pros and cons of this card are obvious. But considering the sheer number of people using this card, we can come to one conclusion. 1000 LPs is worth a card. Upstart Goblin is used x3, so the conclusion is that its worth letting your opponent start with 11000 LPs, as long as you have a 37 card deck.

This is the whole point of running Upstart Goblin, and the undeniable truth of it. If there isn't a reason to run a 37 card deck, and it's worth it to run a 40 instead: Then how come you don't run a 60 card deck. There will always be an optimal number of cards to run in a deck, and if it's not the least possible (37), then it's the most possible (60); which we all know it isn't. If giving your opponent a free 1000-3000 LPs is what you're worried about, I think that's a wrong way of thinking since nowdays yugioh has evolved into a game where LPs just don't really matter anymore, because you either get OTKed for 11k+ or locked down. So as long as your life points aren't 0, there's always a chance to make that big "push" that ultimately secures your victory. Besides, 1000-3000 LPs isn't really all that much when you think about it. At most, it buys your opponent 1-2 turns.

Pros:
1- 37 cards - cool stuff.
2- Implied consistency.

Cons:
1- 0-3000 LPs + for opponent.
2- Playing it cuts you from 3 other cards which could be useful combo cards or relevant traps.

The debate of this card will always remain with conflicts between players thoughts. I personally run Upstart IF I just couldn't find any other fillers in a deck. I don't see a downside of this card honestly and as you said the Life Points don't matter in YGO anymore.

well actually this card is not always needed, you just needed in decks where you can afford 3 cards, some decks can be hard to do such things. anyways it makes the deck faster thinner and more consistent so it's good in fast play decks like tellarknights or raidraptors or whatever needs to find cards faster, but this card will mean a loss of 3 places in auto search decks like heros or BAs and nekroz and such decks. the LPs won't count anymore cuz if you use swarm the field with monsters and good plays you'll take em back in now time. besides it makes a good target for discard effects and summoner monk, so it provides a lot of options just need to be well selected and only when you can really find place for it.

Most duellists would draw it 1 time or 2 in maximmum .. even it gives your opp 1000 LP , but it gives you a chance to draw an additional card which can change eveything , cuz 1 card matters in these formats. 0.0

The good old Upstart Goblin debate i don't really like upstart goblin if i can i will use something else in my decks instead of Upstart Goblin i'm not giving anyone free things lol but yup it depends what deck you are using like Deathmark said my decks are usually anti-meta are slow decks so upstart goblin is not good in my decks but if you have a fast deck & want to thin your deck to get to your cards then upstart goblin is ok to play in them decks since they don't care about giving your opponent lp since they will usually spam things & otk you etc.
