| The Saffira, Queen of Dragons Guide By AhhGoodTimes
WELCOME!
The 5D’s and Zezzle Eras were mostly barren for Rituals. You had occasional gems like Djinn Releaser of Rituals, Preparation of Rites, Herald of Perfection and the Gishki archetype. But it was all about both eras’ respective mechanics, Synchros and Xyzs. The only Ritual we got out of Zezzle, Paladin of Photon Dragon, ended up disappointing Ritual and Photon/Galaxy users alike. With fewer than two pages on DN’s search function, we figured Rituals were for the most part cancelled, what little we had doomed to fall into (even more) obscurity.
Then came the Arc-V Era. Ritual, Fusion and to a lesser extent Synchro and Xyz users figured they would be brushed aside for the newest Pendulum mechanic. But much to everyone’s surprise, the Duelist Alliance started off the Arc-V Era with a rainbow of different colored monsters! In addition to its cover card Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon, it included the Shadolls for Fusions, Yang-Zings for Synchros and Tellarknights for Xyzs.
But most important, it included our boss - Saffira, Queen of Dragons! Ladies and gentlemen, cultists and hipsters (if you’re using Rituals you probably fall into at least one of those two categories), welcome to the official thread for the first Ritual Monster of the Arc-V Era! Celebrate the color blue and explore our different ritual ceremonies from the fiery pits of the Burning Abyss visited by Dante to the sands of Egypt with skies full of Hieratic dragons! Please peruse the guide, engage in discussion and strive to make your Saffira deck the best it can be! And remember, DRAGON BOOBS!
Long Live The Queen! - Saffira Core:
Saffira, Queen of Dragons LIGHT / Level 6 / Dragon / Ritual / Effect / 2500 / 2400 You can Ritual Summon this card with "Hymn of Light". During the End Phase, if this card was Ritual Summoned this turn, or if a LIGHT monster was sent from the hand or Deck to the Graveyard this turn while this card was face-up on the field: You can activate 1 of these effects; ●Draw 2 cards, then discard 1 card. ●Discard 1 random card from your opponent's hand. ●Add 1 LIGHT monster from your Graveyard to your hand. You can only use 1 "Saffira, Queen of Dragons" effect per turn, and only once that turn. Our queen and boss! Her 2500 ATK makes her stronger than previous Level 6 Ritual powerhouses, Hungry Burger (still got more swag though) and Evigishki Gustkraken. Level 6 allows you to use two Level 3 Djinns for her Ritual Summons which is great because the best Djinns, Releaser and Demolisher, are Level 3. Level 6 also allows you to tribute Tefnuit or Su with Hymn of Blessing or send Wattail Dragon or Labradorite, making her compatible with Hieratics. You automatically trigger one of her effects during the End Phase of the turn she’s Ritual Summoned. Effect #1 gains hand advantage and can set-up the grave with goodies like Djinns and Malebranches. #2 decreases your opponent’s hand advantage and can snipe an important card of theirs. #2 is recycling - imagine your opponent’s fear when you add BLS. These effects can also be triggered again by you or your opponent. Run 3 in Burning Abyss Saffira Run 3 in Hieratic Saffira
Hymn of Blessing Ritual Spell This card is used to Ritual Summon "Saffira, Queen of Dragons". You must also Tribute monsters from your hand or field whose total Levels equal 6 or more. If a Ritual Monster(s) you control would be destroyed by battle or card effect while this card is in your Graveyard, you can banish this card instead. The ceremony to summon our queen. Requiring total levels of 6 or more gives us more freedom to Ritual Summon if the situation calls for it. But most important is its graveyard effect which protects Saffira from destruction one time. Combine with Releaser’s SS lock and Demolisher’s targeting immunity and you have quite an annoying monster for your opponent. Run 2-3 in Burning Abyss Saffira Run 1-2 in Hieratic Saffira Support
Manju of the Ten Thousand Hands LIGHT / Level 4 / Fairy / Effect / 1400 /1000 When this card is Normal or Flip Summoned: You can add 1 Ritual Monster Card or 1 Ritual Spell Card from your Deck to your hand. It’s not the fastest but it’s the best Ritual searcher we got with its ability to add either a Ritual Monster or Spell unlike Sonic Bird and Senju. Its Level isn’t ideal with our other Monsters but it can still serve as Saffira or Chaos fodder after its use. Run 2-3 in Burning Abyss Saffira Run 2-3 in Hieratic Saffira
Preparation of Rites Normal Spell Add to your hand 1 Level 7 or lower Ritual Monster Card from your Deck. Then you can add to your hand 1 Ritual Spell Card from your Graveyard. More searchability for Saffira and recycling for Hymn and ARA. A +1 with a Ritual Spell in your grave. Run 2 in Burning Abyss Saffira Run 2 in Hieratic Saffira
- Djinns:
The Djinns of Rituals Releaser and Demolisher are the perfect fat ritual sacrifices. Easily accessible by Tour Guide and Scarm. They can banish themselves for the Ritual Summon allowing you to make multiple uses out of them and to Ritual Summon using less advantage. But the best part are their effects when used for a Ritual Summon, which when combined with Hymn’s graveyard effect and backrow, make for an unstoppable Saffira. Djinn, Releaser of Rituals DARK / Level 3 / Fiend / Effect / 1200 / 2000 When you Ritual Summon a Ritual Monster, you can remove from play this card from your Graveyard as 1 of the monsters required for the Ritual Summon. While the monster Ritual Summoned using this card is face-up on the field, your opponent cannot Special Summon. The vast majority of decks that you see are reliant on Special Summons nowadays when the Extra Deck is a necessity. This is our solution to them. Releaser’s SS lock will make the opponent cry as their JD’s or Drulers stay unused.
Djinn, Demolisher of Rituals DARK / Level 3 / Fiend / Effect / 1500 / 600 When you Ritual Summon a monster, you can banish this card from your Graveyard as 1 of the monsters required for the Ritual Summon. If a player Ritual Summons using this card, that Ritual Summoned monster cannot be targeted by the card effects of the other player. From monsters like Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Bear to backrow like Covenant with the Dark Witch, targetting effects are rampant in the meta. Demolisher provides crucial targeting immunity to Saffira. Run 3-4 of a combination of both in Burning Abyss Saffira Run 0 OR 2 of a combination of both in Hieratic Saffira
- Burning Abyss:
The Malebranches of the Burning Abyss If Tour Guide gives us access to the Rank 3’s and Djinns, these demons from hell solidify and amplify that access a hundred times. They strengthen our ability to get TGU, Xyz Summon Rank 3’s and set-up the Djinns for the RItual Summon. Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss DARK / Level 3 / Fiend / Effect / 800 / 2000 If you control a monster that is not a "Burning Abyss" monster, destroy this card. You can only use 1 of the following effects of "Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss" per turn, and only once that turn. ●If you control no Spell/Trap Cards: You can Special Summon this card from your hand. ●During the End Phase, if this card was sent to the Graveyard this turn: You can add 1 Level 3 DARK Fiend-Type monster from your Deck to your hand, except "Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss". Increased searchability for the Djinns as well the ability to search more copies of TGU, allowing you to press on the Rank 3 attack. This is a godsend for the TGU/Djinn engine. Run 2 in Burning Abyss Saffira Run 0-2 in Hieratic Saffira Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss DARK / Level 3 / Fiend / Effect / 800 /2000 If you control a monster that is not a "Burning Abyss" monster, destroy this card. You can only use 1 of the following effects of "Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss" per turn, and only once that turn. ●If you control no Spell/Trap Cards: You can Special Summon this card from your hand. ●If this card is sent to the Graveyard: You can Special Summon 1 "Burning Abyss" monster from your Deck, except "Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss".
Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss DARK / Level 3 / Fiend / Effect / 1600 / 1000 If you control a monster that is not a "Burning Abyss" monster, destroy this card. You can only use 1 of the following effects of "Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss" per turn, and only once that turn. ● If you control no Spell/Trap Cards: You can Special Summon this card from your hand. ● If this card is sent to the Graveyard: You can target 1 "Burning Abyss" monster in your Graveyard, except "Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss"; Special Summon it. These two allow for more ways to churn our Rank 3 Xyzs as well as trigger Scarm’s effect, which in turn searches TGU and Djinns. Think of them as our support for our support card while giving us a way to better fight our opponent before summoning Saffira. Run 2 of each in Burning Abyss Saffira Run 0 of each in Hieratic Saffira
Mathematician EARTH / Level 3 / Spellcaster / Effect / 1500 / 500 When this card is Normal Summoned: You can send 1 Level 4 or lower monster from your Deck to the Graveyard. When this card is destroyed by battle and sent to the Graveyard: You can draw 1 card. Another outlet to dump a Djinn or Burning Abyss Monster. It can also be used to dump a LIGHT to trigger Saffira's effect again. It's a decent option though keep in mind that the TGU + Burning Abyss engine functions well on its own for Fiend searching and Djinn preparation. Also we don't want to be too Normal Summon-reliant since we already have Manju and TGU. Run 0-1 in Burning Abyss Saffira Run 0 in Hieratic Saffira
Crane Crane Earth / Level 3 / Winged-Beast / Effect / 300 / 900 When this card is Normal Summoned: You can target 1 Level 3 monster in your Graveyard; Special Summon that target. Its effects are negated. You can only use the effect of "Crane Crane" once per turn. Another one-card Rank 3 Xyz and possible trigger of the Burning Abyss monsters along with TGU. Like Mathematician, it's also a decent option of it might seem a bit redundant and cloggy with TGU and Burning Abyss doing well enough with Rank 3 plays. Also Normal Summon-reliance is an issue yet again. Run 0-1 in Burning Abyss Saffira Run 0 in Hieratic Saffira
Tour Guide From The Underworld DARK / Level 3 / Fiend / Effect / 1400 / 1000 When this card is Normal Summoned: You can Special Summon 1 Level 3 Fiend-Type monster from your hand or Deck. Its effects are negated, and it cannot be used as a Synchro Material Monster. This loli is our access to the Rank 3 toolbox and tutor for the Djinns and Malebranches. Obvious staple. Run 3 in Burning Abyss Saffira Run 0-3 in Hieratic Saffira
- Hieratics:
The Hieratic Dragons These guys make for good tributes, summoning a Normal Dragon when tributed. The Normal Dragons themselves can be used as Advanced Ritual Art fodder. The best part is that when used alone or when tributed for Saffira, they give us Rank 6 access. Hieratic Dragon of Tefnuit LIGHT / Level 6 / Dragon / Effect / 2100 / 1400 If your opponent controls a monster and you control no monsters, you can Special Summon this card (from your hand). This card cannot attack during the turn it is Special Summoned this way. When this card is Tributed: Special Summon 1 Dragon-Type Normal Monster from your hand, Deck, or Graveyard, also make its ATK and DEF 0. Level 6 Cyber Dragon to begin a Tefnuit + Su Rank 6 play and replaces itself with a Normal Dragon when tributed for a Tribute Summon, Su Special Summon or Saffira Ritual Summon. Run 0 in Burning Abyss Saffira Run 3 in Hieratic Saffira
Hieratic Dragon of Su Light / Level 6 / Dragon / Effect / 2200 / 1000 You can Special Summon this card (from your hand) by Tributing 1 "Hieratic" monster. Once per turn: You can Tribute 1 "Hieratic" monster, except this card, from your hand or your side of the field to target 1 Spell/Trap card your opponent controls; destroy that target. When this card is Tributed: Special Summon 1 Dragon-Type Normal Monster from your hand, Deck or Graveyard, and make its ATK and DEF 0. SS-able Hieratic for a Tefnuit + Su Rank 6 play and replaces itself with a Normal Dragon when tributed for another Su Special Summon, Tribute Summon or Saffira Ritual Summon. Run 0 in Burning Abyss Saffira Run 2-3 in Hieratic Saffira
Hieratic Seal of Convocation Normal Spell Add 1 "Hieratic" monster from your Deck to your hand. Searchability for the Hieratic portion of the deck for better consistency. Run 0 in Burning Abyss Saffira Run 2 in Hieratic Saffira
Wattail Dragon Labradorite Dragon Level 6 Normal Dragons. Used for Advanced Ritual Art fodder and Special SUmmon with the effects of the Hieratics for Rank 6 Xyzs. Run 0 in Burning Abyss Saffira Run 2 of one or both of them in Hieratic Saffira
Advanced Ritual Art Ritual Spell This card can be used to Ritual Summon any 1 Ritual Monster in your hand. You must also send Normal Monsters from your Deck to the Graveyard whose total Levels equal the Level of that Ritual Monster. Right off the bat you can Ritual Summon at a -1 instead of a -2 which makes a huge difference, brushing aside the hassle of preparing tributes and saving more of your advantage for a rainy day. It requires us to run Normals but that’s fine for using Hieratics, which already incorporate Normal Monsters. Run 0 in Burning Abyss Saffira Run 2 in Hieratic Saffira
- Support:
Dark Armed Dragon DARK / Level 7 / Dragon / 2800 / 1000 Cannot be Normal Summoned or Set. Must be Special Summoned (from your hand) by having exactly 3 DARK monsters in your Graveyard, and cannot be Special Summoned by other ways. You can banish 1 DARK monster from your Graveyard to target 1 card on the field; destroy that target. Effect monster boss monster that can plow through your opponent’s defenses. It can be dead late game though due to the Burning Abyss filling up the graveyard easily. Run 0-1 in Burning Abyss Saffira Run 0 in Hieratic Saffira
Chaos Sorcerer DARK / Level 6 / Spellcaster / 2300 / 2000 Cannot be Normal Summoned or Set. Must first be Special Summoned (from your hand) by banishing 1 LIGHT and 1 DARK monster from your Graveyard. Once per turn: You can target 1 face-up monster on the field; banish that target. This card cannot attack during the turn you activate this effect. Great banish effect and also Level 6 for Rank 6 plays. Run 0-1 in Burning Abyss Saffira Run 0-1 in Hieratic Saffira
Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning LIGHT / Level 8 / Warrior / 3000 / 2500 Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. Must first be Special Summoned (from your hand) by banishing 1 LIGHT and 1 DARK monster from your Graveyard. Once per turn, you can activate 1 of these effects. ● Target 1 monster on the field; banish that target face-up. This card cannot attack the turn you activate this effect. ● During the Damage Step, if this attacking card destroys an opponent's monster by battle: It can make a second attack in a row. Fun fact: This a retrain of the Ritual Monster Black Luster Soldier. Anyway this is the ultimate Effect Monster boss. Banishing is stilll very powerful, as is the ability to cause a lot of damage or destroy two monsters. An amazing topdeck. Run 1 in Burning Abyss Saffira Run 0-1 in Hieratic Saffira
Foolish Burial Normal Spell Send 1 monster from your Deck to the Graveyard. Sets up a Djinn or triggers a Burning Abyss monster. Run 1 in Burning Abyss Saffira Run 0 in Hieratic Saffira
Rank-Up-Magic Astral Force Normal Spell Target the 1 Xyz Monster you control with the highest Rank (your choice, if tied); Special Summon from your Extra Deck, 1 monster with the same Type and Attribute as that monster you control but 2 Ranks higher, by using it as the Xyz Material. (This Special Summon is treated as an Xyz Summon. Xyz Materials attached to it also become Xyz Materials on the Summoned monster.) During your Draw Phase, if this card is in your Graveyard, instead of conducting your normal draw: You can add this card from your Graveyard to your hand. You cannot Special Summon during the turn you activate this effect, except by the effect of "Rank-Up-Magic Astral Force". Our access to Rank 3 with TGU and the Burning Abyss Monsters makes Astral Force the perfect tool for us. Angieer becomes Tiras, Alucard becomes Bram, Grenosaurus becomes Volcasaurus and most important, Dante becomes Pleiades! That's right, Saffira has a Constellar knight with a Quick Effect Brionac ability to serve her! Saffira's 2500 ATK won't always be strong enough and there's only so much the Rank 3 toolbox can do when the opponent already has a powerful monster on the field. So having access to Rank 5 bosses is amazing for fighting our opponent before summoning Perfect Saffira. It's also reusable after having been activated or milled by Dante. Run 0-2 in Burning Abyss Saffira Run 0 in Hieratic Saffira
Phoenix Wind Wing Blast Normal Trap Discard 1 card, then target 1 card your opponent controls; place that target on the top of the Deck. Great Trap for disrupting your opponent, hacking his next draw or getting rid of an Extra Deck Monster. Aso serves as a way to get rid of Djinn or Burning Abyss monsters in the hand. Run 2-3 in Burning Abyss Saffira Run 0 in Hieratic Saffira Deck Variants
- Decks:
Burning Abyss Saffira You use the Burning Abyss to fight and weaken the opponent with Rank 3’s while setting up more TGU/Rank 3’s plays or the Djinns for your Ritual Summon. The Djinn preparation process is faster and more consistent thanks to our friends from hell. You can also fight with Rank 5's thanks to Astral Force. This culminates in Ritual Summoning "Perfect Saffira" with the combined added abilities of Releaser, Demolisher and Hymn. You’re basically playing a Burning Abyss deck (albiet lighter) early/mid game and summoning an invulnerable/lockdown boss mid/early game. It always feels nice fighting with Rank 3’s and then laying down the Saffira pain to finish your opponent. As does using Saffira’s 1st effect to draw 2 and then discard Scarm for a TGU search.
Hieratic Saffira This is all about power plays with the ability to Ritual Summon Saffira at a lesser cost with Advanced Ritual Art and Xyz Summon Rank 6’s using standard Hieratic combos or by tributing a Hieratic for Hymn. While Burning Abyss Saffira builds up to a powerful Saffira, Hieratic Saffira makes more active and common use of her due to 1) ARA having no tribute requirement. 2) Ptolemy M7 access. 3) Running more Ritual Spells (Hymn and ARA) which in turn makes Preparation of Rites a +1 more often and decreases the likelihood of the dreaded “Ritual Monster clogging". It’s not as consistent nor fullproof as Burning Abyss Saffira, but it's quite fun and powerful.
Herald of Perfection Herald decks focus on Ritual Summoning Herald of Perfection with ARA and controlling and choking the opponent by negating all his plays. This is usually sumplemented by non-Ritual cards such as Kristya, Agents, Spirits and Transmodify targets depending on the variant. Many Herald users like to tech Saffira for a more offensive Ritual option. Think of her as the sword to Herald's shield. Her effects are also good for getting more Herald fodder, setting up Kristya or putting more pressure on the opponent. You can also keep on triggering her effects with Herald discards, another ARA summon or Spirit Lavalval Chain plays.
- Rulings:
Rulings Hymn of Light
- "If a face-up Ritual Monster(s) you control would be destroyed, you can banish this card from your Graveyard instead." effect does not start a Chain Link. (This effect can also be applied during the Damage Step.)
- "If a face-up Ritual Monster(s) you control would be destroyed, you can banish this card from your Graveyard instead." effect can be applied even when a Ritual Monster that was not Special Summoned by this card would be destroyed.
- "If a face-up Ritual Monster(s) you control would be destroyed, you can banish this card from your Graveyard instead." effect can be applied when a Ritual Monster would be destroyed even if this card was sent directly from your hand or Deck to the Graveyard.
- "If a face-up Ritual Monster(s) you control would be destroyed, you can banish this card from your Graveyard instead." effect can be applied even when 2 Ritual Monsters would be destroyed simultaneously by "Torrential Tribute". If you do, face-up Ritual Monsters you control will remain on the field. Furthermore, this effect cannot be applied if only face-down Ritual Monsters would be destroyed.

Yeah the burning abyss build may be the best way to go. Tutors out your djinns and gives utility outside of ritual summons. |
